Privacy Policy
Last Updated: May 1, 2025
Introduction
Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains how Consierge (the “App”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects your personal information when you use our mobile application. By using Consierge, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. We wrote this policy in clear language so you can understand what data we collect and what we do with it. If you do not agree with our practices, please do not use the App. Scope : This Privacy Policy applies to all users of the Consierge App and any related services. It covers information you provide to us as well as data we collect when you use the App’s features. We do not have a separate legal entity name, so we use the App’s name (“Consierge”) throughout this policy. Please note that by creating an account or using any feature of the App, you consent to the practices described here.
Information We Collect
We only collect information that is relevant to providing and improving the Consierge experience. This includes:
- Account Information: When you create a Consierge account using our native sign-up, we collect your first name, last name, email address, and a password. (The password is stored in encrypted form for security.) If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email from those services instead of a password. Apple Sign-In also provides us with a unique user identifier (and your full name and email, unless you choose to hide your email). Google Sign-In similarly provides a unique ID token along with your name and email. We use this information to set up your user profile and let you log in.
- Profile & User Content: You may optionally provide a username for your profile (which can be displayed to the community). The App also allows you to add content such as “loved” places, itineraries, city guides, reviews, and photos. If you submit content (for example, a review or photo of a place), we collect that content and associate it with your account. Your loved places and created itineraries are tracked in your profile so you (and, where applicable, other users) can view your activity. Please note: Any content you share publicly (like reviews, photos, or added places) will be visible to other users of the App along with your first name or username.
- Location Data (Optional): Consierge can collect location information to provide location-based services, but only with your permission. You have two ways to provide location data: (1) Device Location: You can allow the App to access your location via Apple Location Services (GPS or other sensor data) when the App is in use. This will provide us with your approximate latitude and longitude. (2) Manual Entry: Alternatively, you can manually enter a city or address to set your location. Location data (whether provided by the device or by manual entry) is used to show nearby places, city guides, and personalized travel suggestions. We consider location information personal data, so we treat it with care as described in this policy. If you do not want to share location, you can simply decline permission or refrain from entering location info – the core features of the App will still be accessible, but certain location-based features may be limited.
- Usage Data: We do not use any third-party analytics SDKs, advertising trackers, or crash reporting tools that collect additional data about your behavior. However, to operate the App, our servers may automatically log basic technical information when you use Consierge. This can include log records (e.g. your device type, operating system, IP address, and timestamps of actions). We use this information solely for debugging, to monitor performance, and to ensure the service is working properly. We do not profile you or track you across other apps or websites.
- Sensitive Data: We do not ask for or intend to collect any sensitive personal information such as government ID numbers, financial information, health data, biometric data, or information about your race, religion, or sexual orientation. Consierge is a travel and community app, and we limit our data collection to the details needed for your account and the app’s travel features. We also do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 13 (see Children’s Privacy below).
How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information to operate, provide, and improve the Consierge App’s services and features. Specifically:
- App Features: We use your account information to create and maintain your account, allow you to log in, and personalize your experience. For example, we use your name or username to greet you in the app and attribute any content you post (like a review or an itinerary) to you. If you create itineraries or mark places as “loved,” we save that information to display back to you in your profile and to enable community features (such as showing how many people loved a place).
- Location Services: Your location data (when provided) is used to tailor the app experience to your area. This means we might show you nearby attractions, city guides relevant to your location, or distance information for places in your itineraries. Location information also allows us to provide maps via Apple Maps and suggest travel plans or recommendations around your current or specified location. We only use your location to provide these services, and not for any unrelated purposes. If you disable or do not grant location access, we simply will not use location data (some features like map-based suggestions might then require manual location input).
- AI-Powered Suggestions: One of Consierge’s features is an AI-powered travel suggestion tool, which uses OpenAI’s technology to give you personalized recommendations. If you choose to use this feature, we will send limited information to the OpenAI API to generate a response. Specifically, we may include your username (if you have created one) and your location (city or coordinates, if you have enabled location services) along with your request or query to the AI. We use this information to get contextually relevant and personalized suggestions from the AI (for example, recommending sights in your area or addressing you by name in the response). We do not share any other personal information with OpenAI – no emails, no full names, no contact info, etc. The data shared is only used to produce the suggestion you asked for. (More details on OpenAI sharing are in the “How We Share Your Information” section below.)
- Administration & Safety: Internally, authorized team members (including administrators or moderators) may access user content and information as needed to perform their duties – for example, to moderate posted content or investigate issues. We use data to monitor for and prevent fraudulent activities or misuse of the App, and to enforce moderation. If we detect behavior that violates our guidelines or could be illegal, we might review relevant user information to address the situation (for example, removing prohibited content or suspending an account).
- Improvement of Services: We may use non-personal, aggregated data to analyze how the App is used and to improve features. For example, knowing how many total users create itineraries or which cities are most popular can help us decide where to add new guides. These analytics are done in-house without using third-party tracking, and individual users are not identifiable in these aggregated statistics.
We do not use your personal data for any purposes other than those described above. In particular, we do not sell your information to data brokers or use it for targeted advertising purposes. Everything we collect is aimed at giving you a better travel and community experience on Consierge.
How We Share Your Information
We understand that sharing personal information with third parties is a big concern, so we want to be clear about when and with whom data is shared. In short: We do not share your personal data with any third parties except as necessary to operate the App (such as using OpenAI for the AI feature, or cloud services to host our database). We also never sell your data. Here are the circumstances in which your information may be shared:
- Service Providers (Subprocessors): We use certain trusted third-party services to run Consierge. These include our cloud hosting provider where the app’s database is stored (for example, a managed cloud SQL database service) and services that help us with app functionality (e.g., Apple Maps for map data). These third parties may process or store your data on our behalf only for the purpose of providing their specific services to us. For instance, your account data is stored in the cloud database, and map queries may be handled by Apple’s servers. We ensure any service providers implement appropriate security standards and we do not allow them to use your data for their own marketing or purposes outside of what we’ve asked them to do.
- Sign-In Services (Apple, Google): If you choose to sign in via Apple or Google, those services will share certain information with us (as described under Account Information). We do not send any data back to Apple or Google beyond what is necessary for the sign-in process. (For example, when you use “Sign in with Apple,” Apple will confirm your login and we receive your name/email; we do not provide Apple with additional personal info from your Consierge account.) These login providers may separately process your use of their sign-in functionality under their own privacy policies, so we advise reviewing Apple’s and Google’s privacy policies for information on how they handle your credentials.
- OpenAI: We integrate with OpenAI’s API to power our AI travel suggestions. We only share limited data with OpenAI, and only when you actively use the AI feature. Specifically, when you request an AI-generated suggestion or response in the App, our system sends your query along with your username and/or location (if you have provided those) to OpenAI’s servers. This information is used by OpenAI to generate a personalized travel recommendation or answer, which is then returned to the App and shown to you. OpenAI acts as our processor for this function – they are not permitted to use your data for any purpose other than to provide the response. According to OpenAI’s API terms, they do not use API-submitted data to train their public models or for other customers by default. We do not share your real name, email, or other contact details with OpenAI. However, using the AI feature inherently means your query (which might include some information you provide in the question) is sent to OpenAI. We recommend that you do not include sensitive personal information in any query you submit to the AI. Aside from fulfilling your specific requests, we do not allow OpenAI to store or reuse your data. If you do not use the AI suggestion feature, no data is shared with OpenAI at all.
- Legal Compliance: We may disclose information about you if required to do so by law, subpoena, or legal process. For example, if a court order or government authority lawfully requires us to provide data, we will comply. We may also share information if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, investigate fraud, or ensure the safety of our users or others. This includes exchanging information with law enforcement or to enforce our Terms of Service or other agreements. We will only do this when legally permitted and after careful consideration of your privacy rights.
- Change of Ownership: In the unlikely event that Consierge (or substantially all of its assets) is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale, user information may be transferred to the new owner/partner as part of that transaction. If this happens, we will ensure that the successor organization is bound to the same commitments described in this Privacy Policy regarding your personal data, and we will notify users of any change in data handling.
What We Don’t Do: We do not share your personal information with advertisers or social media companies. We do not sell or rent any list of our users’ personal data to third parties. We also do not share any user data with third parties for their own independent marketing or purposes unrelated to providing you the Consierge services. Your data is yours, and we only use it to serve you.
Data Retention & Deletion
We retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law. Here’s how we handle data retention:
- Account Data: We will keep your account information (name, email, etc.), profile, and saved activities (loved places, itineraries, etc.) for as long as you maintain an account with Consierge. This allows us to provide you with ongoing access to your data each time you use the App. If you become inactive, we may continue to store your information in case you return, unless you request deletion.
- User Content: Content you post (reviews, photos, added places, guides) may remain on our service as long as your account is active, so that other users can benefit from it. If you delete your account or ask us to delete your data, we will remove or anonymize personal identifiers on content you provided. For example, your reviews might be disassociated from your name/username or removed entirely, depending on our operational considerations, to respect your deletion request. We won’t keep your name attached to content if you have deleted your account.
- AI Query Data: Any data shared with OpenAI for the AI suggestions feature (like your query, username, location) is not stored long-term by us. The queries and AI responses may be cached briefly on our systems to display results, but they are not permanently attached to your profile. OpenAI itself, per its policy, may retain API request data for a short period (up to 30 days) for monitoring abuse, but we do not control their retention. We do not store a history of your chats or AI queries in a way that’s personally identifiable to you (unless this is a feature we explicitly provide in-app, which currently we do not).
- Logs & Backups: Like most services, our systems may keep backup copies or log records for a time. Your data might persist in secure backups for a short duration (even after deletion) due to how backups are maintained. If so, we will continue to safeguard that information and will purge or anonymize it according to our backup retention schedules. Any server logs containing your IP or device info are typically rotated and deleted periodically and are only used for troubleshooting or security monitoring in the interim.
- Account Deletion: You have the right to delete your Consierge account at any time. We provide an option in the App to initiate account deletion (or you may contact us directly to request deletion – see Your Choices and Rights below). Once you or we delete your account, we will promptly remove or anonymize your personal data from our active databases. Account deletion means your profile information and all personal data we have about you will be erased or anonymized, and you will no longer be able to log in. Any remaining information in backups will be deleted routinely as those backups are updated. We aim to honor verified deletion requests in a timely manner (generally within 30 days or sooner). After deletion, please note that if you had contributed public content, that content may either be removed or retained in an anonymous form (as described above), but no personal identifiers will remain.
- Legal Obligations: In certain cases, we may be required to retain some information even after account deletion, if needed to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes. For example, we might retain a record of a transaction or correspondence if required for accounting or if the law mandates keeping it. If we do need to retain any data for such reasons, we will continue to protect that data and only keep it for the mandated period, then delete it.
Your Choices & Rights
We believe you should have control over your personal information. Here are the choices and rights you have regarding the data you provide to Consierge:
- Access & Update: You can view and update the personal information in your profile at any time by logging into the App and accessing the account settings or profile section. For example, you can update your name, email address, or change your username if the App provides those options. Keeping your information up-to-date helps us serve you best. If any information is inaccurate and you cannot correct it through the App, you may contact us for assistance in updating it.
- Location Permissions: You have control over whether the App can access your device’s location. At any time, you can enable or disable location services for Consierge through your device settings (on iOS, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Consierge, and choose “Never” or “While Using the App” as you prefer). If you previously granted location access and later revoke it, the App will stop collecting device location data. You can also manually clear any saved location in your profile by editing your location info in the App. Disabling location may limit certain features (like automatic local recommendations), but the App will otherwise remain functional.
- AI Feature Opt-Out: The AI suggestions feature is entirely optional. If you do not want any information shared with OpenAI, you can choose not to use the AI-powered suggestions. Simply avoid opening the AI suggestion tool or asking the AI for recommendations. If you do use it and then change your mind, you can discontinue use at any time. (As noted, we do not retain your AI queries in a personal profile, so stopping use is sufficient to cease any related data sharing.) Also, if you want to use the feature without sharing location, you can decline location permission – you might still get generic suggestions from the AI without location context.
- Account Deletion: You have the right to delete your account and all personal data associated with it. We have made this easy: if the App includes an account settings section, look for a “Delete Account” option. This will initiate the deletion process as described in the Data Retention and Deletion section. If for some reason you cannot find an in-app deletion option, please contact us at our support email (provided below) with your request. We may need to verify your identity (for example, via your account email) before deleting the data for security reasons. Remember that deleting your account is irreversible – once completed, you will lose access to your account and data (though you are welcome to create a new account again, it will be a clean slate).
- Privacy Rights in Your Region: Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local privacy laws (such as the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)). These rights may include the right to request a copy of the personal data we hold about you, the right to request correction or erasure of your data, the right to restrict or object to certain processing, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising privacy rights. Consierge’s policy is to respect all applicable rights and to handle your data in a compliant manner. If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, California, or another region with privacy regulations, and you wish to exercise any rights that apply to you, please contact us (see Contact Us below). We will review and respond to all legitimate requests in accordance with applicable law.
Your use of the App is voluntary. We want you to feel comfortable with how we handle your information. If you have questions or concerns about specific data practices or need help with any privacy-related choices, you can reach out to us at any time. (Contact details are at the end of this policy.)
Security of Your Data
We take the security of your personal information seriously and implement reasonable and appropriate measures to protect it from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. Here are some of the steps we take to safeguard your data:
- Encryption: All communication between the Consierge app and our servers is encrypted using industry-standard protocols (HTTPS/TLS). This means that when your data (like your login credentials or any content you submit) is in transit over the internet, it is protected from eavesdropping. Additionally, sensitive information like passwords is stored in encrypted form in our database (we never store plaintext passwords).
- Access Controls: Personal data in our cloud database is restricted to authorized personnel who need access to operate or maintain the service (for example, to assist with customer support or technical issues). Our team members and any service providers are bound by confidentiality obligations. Admin users who have special roles in the App for content moderation can access content and user profiles solely for keeping the community safe and the app functioning properly. They are trained to handle data appropriately and are governed by this Privacy Policy and internal policies.
- Security Testing & Updates: We keep the app software and our server infrastructure up to date with the latest security patches and best practices. We periodically review our security procedures and update them as needed to address new potential threats. We also monitor the system for possible vulnerabilities or attacks. If we discover any issue, we act promptly to fix it.
- Minimal Data Collection: One of the best ways to protect user data is not to have extra data in the first place. We only collect information that we actually need for the App’s functionality (as outlined above). By limiting what we store, we reduce the risk exposure. We also minimize how long we keep personal data (see the Data Retention section), so your information isn’t kept indefinitely on our servers without purpose.
- Minimal Data Collection:When we use third-party services like our cloud provider or OpenAI, we choose reputable companies with strong security practices. For example, our cloud database provider is likely to have robust physical and network security. OpenAI, as our AI processor, transmits data securely as well. While no service can guarantee perfect security, we make sure our partners are committed to protecting data to high standards.
Despite all our efforts, it’s important to note that no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We strive to protect your personal information, but we cannot guarantee absolute security. You also play a role: remember to use a strong, unique password for your account, and keep your login credentials confidential. If you suspect any unauthorized access to your account or any security breaches, please contact us immediately so we can help.
Children’s Privacy
Consierge is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. Our services are intended for general audiences interested in travel and community recommendations. If you are under 13, please do not create an account or provide any personal information. If we learn that we have inadvertently collected personal data from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. For parents or guardians: If you become aware that your child has provided us with personal information without your consent, please contact us and we will work to delete the data and (if applicable) terminate the child’s account. We also do not intentionally allow users under 16 to use features that would involve sensitive data sharing. If your teenager (aged 13-17) uses the App, we encourage you to discuss with them the importance of privacy and safe online behavior.
Compliance with Apple Guidelines
We have designed our data practices to comply with Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines, including section 5.1.1 on privacy and data collection. This means:
- We only ask for user data that is relevant to the app’s core functionality (for example, we ask for your name and email to create an account, and location access to provide location-based content, both of which are central to Consierge’s purpose). We do not require unnecessary personal information to use the app. In fact, you can explore many features of Consierge as a guest without logging in. Account creation is only required for saving personal itineraries, “loving” places, posting reviews, and other community interactions. Viewing public content (such as general city guides or exploring the map) can be done without an account, in line with Apple’s guidelines.
- We are transparent about our data collection and use. This Privacy Policy is accessible to users (and linked in our App Store listing and/or within the app settings) so that you can review what we collect and why. We have endeavored to explain everything in plain language. If anything is unclear, you can always contact us for more information.
- We provide account deletion as required. Users who create an account have the option to delete it and thereby delete their personal data. This can be done through the app’s interface or by contacting us, as described above. We do not simply deactivate accounts – when you request deletion, we will permanently remove personal data (except for any data we are required to keep by law, which we will handle as per legal requirements). This gives you full control over your data if you decide to stop using Consierge.
- We respect all platform-specific privacy requirements. For example, if you use Sign in with Apple, we adhere to Apple’s requirement of letting you hide your email and we handle that appropriately. We also honor any settings or permissions you’ve set (so if you’ve denied location, the app will not try to collect it again without a prompt, etc.).
Our aim is not only to meet the letter of the guidelines but also to respect the spirit of user privacy that Apple’s policies promote. If for some reason our app or this policy ever falls out of alignment with these guidelines or any applicable privacy laws, we will update our practices and this document accordingly.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as our app evolves or as privacy requirements change. If we make significant changes, we will notify you by appropriate means – for example, by posting the updated policy on our website (or within the app) with a new effective date, and/or by sending a notice to the email associated with your account. We encourage you to review this policy periodically for any updates. When we update the policy, we will revise the “Last Updated” date at the top (or bottom) of this document. Any changes will become effective when posted, unless otherwise required by law. If the changes materially affect how we handle personal data, we may seek additional consent if required. By continuing to use the App after those changes become effective, you acknowledge and agree to the updated policy.
